New designs from Stoney Creek, Calico Crossroads, CM Designs, Imaginating and Kustom Krafts are also available, as well as needlepoint kits from Dimensions and the new Winter Floral Cross from Janlynn.

We are pleased to annouce the addition of Crochet and Knitting to our site. Beginner Kits which include a DVD and Patterns from Leisure Arts are now available. More pattern books will be added in the weeks and months ahead.

New Halloween and Christmas rubber stamps have been added to our sister site Midnite Dreams. Now is the perfect time to get all your holiday cards and projects started.

I know it's been a while since we posted so i'm here to give you an update on what's been going on. We have been crazy busy getting ready for all the upcoming holidays. New kits and patterns are arriving all the time and we are getting them up on the site as fast as possible. We added new designer collections to our Charts and Patterns category which include Mirabilia, Lavender & Lace, Passione Ricamo, Mystic Stitch and others. New Halloween patterns from Stoney Creek were just added so go check them out.

It's only September but it's time to get those Christmas projects started as well and we have all the kits and patterns for stockings, tree skirts, ornaments and pictures. Working on holiday projects is a great way to get in the spirit of the upcoming season ;)

Stranded cotton floss is most commonly used for cross stitch, but silk, rayon, specialty, or metallic threads can also be experimented with for varying effects.

Cotton floss - Cotton floss is the most versatile thread to use for cross stitch. It is available in a wide range of colors and consists of six loosely twisted strands of mercerized cotton. A cut length of floss can be split into different weights to suit different fabric counts. As a general rule, use two strands for stitching on 14 count Aida fabric or over two threads on 28 count evenweave fabric, and three strands for stitching on 11 count Aida fabric. Use floss in 15-18 inch lengths to avoid tangling and for ease of use.

Rayon and Silk floss - Floss is also made from rayon or pure silk. Both types are slightly more expensive but they have a great sheen and the colors are vibrant. When using rayon or silk floss, cut a shorter length than usual and choose a tapestry needle with a latge enough eye to accommodate the thread comfortably, otherwise it will rub and fray each time you pull the needle through the fabric.

Specialty threads - Over-dyed and hand-painted floss, often known as specialty threads, offer a wide range of color mixtures and effects, depending on the manufacturer. Several different shades or colors are applied to the thread at fixed intervals so that they blend into each other. These threads are more expensive than cotton floss in solid colors so should be used in small amounts to add an extra special dash of color to a design.

Metallic threads - Like specialty threads, metallic threads can be used to add accents of color and sparkle to a design. They are available in metallic, pearlized, and flourescent finishes and in varying weights, so choose one to suit the count of fabric you are using. Fine braid No. 4 works well on 14 count Aida and 28 count evenweave fabric.

Experiment with all the above threads and have fun adding special touches to all your needlework.

There are two main types of fabric used for cross stitching, referred to as evenweave and Aida, although Aida is still evenly woven. Either of these fabrics make a good choice for cross stitching because the evely woven warp and weft threads allow the stitches to be made identical size and to be accureately placed on the fabric.

Evenweave fabric - Evenweave fabric has the same vertical and horizontal threads woven to every 1 in. of fabric. The number of threads is called the count. The most popular sizes are 28 and 36 count, which contain 28 or 36 threads for every 1 in. Cross stitching is usually worked over pairs of evenweave threads rather than single threads, which means that when you stitch on 28 count evenweave you can fit 14 stitches into 1 in. of fabric. Evenweave fabric can be made from linen, cotton or a blend of different fibers.

Aida fabric - Aida fabric is the most popular evenly woven cotton fabric used for cross stitching, and its appearance varies from the traditional evenweave fabric described above. For Aida, groups of even sized threads are woven together to form a series of distinct blocks, over which individual stitches are placed. The blocks are very easy to count so this fabric is perfect for a beginner. Like traditional evenweave, Aida is available in different counts: 14 count Aida is one of the most widely used sizes, allowing you to fit 14 stitches to every 1 in. of fabric. 11 count Aida (11 blocks to 1 in.) has a larger weave so the stitches are bigger, while stitches worked on 16 count (16 blocks to 1 in.) or 18 count (18 blocks to 1 in.) are smaller.

Can you believe that Christmas is just 2 weeks away! Time has flown by and we have been sooo busy working, shopping and seeing friends and family that I just haven't had the time to post. Well I figured it was time, so I will just let you know that we have been working really hard getting things ready for next month. There will be more new releases coming along with new monthly specials, kits and patterns. I will also be posting more projects and information as the month goes along.

Decorating Book Covers

A recipe book with all your favorite recipes handwritten in it makes a great gift for family and friends to treasure for years to come. But you want to make it even more special by decorating or embellishing the cover which is usually pretty plain, well this project will do just that.

First you will need to measure the length of the book cover and then double that measurement. Add another inch (1") or so for joining the fabric. Now either use a piece of Aida fabric or Aida band cut to your final measurements. Fold the strip in half to find the center. Start stitching food and kitchen motifs working from the center out and only stitching the length of the front of the book. (Tip: make sure you choose designs that fit the width of the strip your stitching)

After all the stitching is complete you can iron a piece of lightweight interfacing to the back of the stitched strip to help hold stitches in place (this step isn't mandatory). Now place the strip on the book and turn the ends under the front cover and just slip stitch to join fabric together. Thats it, all done!!

Using other designs you can also decorate wedding albums, baby books, journals or a special christmas photo album.

Making Candle Rings

Decorating around the house for all the upcoming holidays is fun and something I look forward to. Every year I add new things to keep it fresh, interesting and most importantly fun! Candle rings are another great way to decorate something that most people probably already have and give it some new life.

First measure around the candle you want to make the band for (thick, fat candles work best) and add about an inch (1") for turning the ends. Now choose a design to stitch. For Halloween you can use pumpkins and bats, for Thanksgiving you can use fall leaves and for Christmas use a wreath, snowman, poinsettia, gingerbread man or bells. Whatever design you choose just make sure to buy your Aida band wide enough so that the design fits. Cut the Aida band to the length needed for the candle. Fold the band in half to find your center point and stitch your design onto the band.

To attach it to your candle first turn under the ends, press and slipstitch for a clean finished edge. Then wrap the band around the candle and use either two-sided sticky tape or slipstitching to hold in place. Pretty simple huh! They also make great gifts for teachers, babysitters, coaches or anyone else you need a quick gift for.

Another way to hold the band in place is by using pins to tack it down in the back. Only use that method if no one is going to see the backs of your candles. Cute trick ; )

Important Note: These bands are for decorative use only. When burning your candle remove the band.

NEW!! Christmas Daydreams

The Daydreams collection is a very popular one. I'm thrilled that The Angels Nook now has christmas designs available. This collection is designed for today's woman and feature a contemporary look that is quick and easy to do. Everything you need to finish the project is included in the kit. Most designs can be easily finished in a weekend and ready to display. They also make great gifts either completed or still in kit form any stitcher would love.

Easy Sachets

Another quick and easy project is making sachets. Use them in all your clothing drawers or add a hanger to them and hang them up in your closet to keep everything smelling fresh.

Again, use small designs like an oriental symbol, a butterfly, an initial, a simple saying or a cute birdhouse. Anything you like can be used, there are no rules here. After you finish stitching your design cut your fabric to any size you want your sachet to be (I usually make them about 4" square) plus 1/2" for the seams. Now with right sides together pin the fabric to hold in place and then stitch around all sides leaving an opening on on side. Trim the corners diagonally and turn right sides out. Fill the sachet with a little filling and some potpourri and slip stitch the opening closed.

You can also make these for holiday gifts using small holiday designs. Put 3 or 4 together in a bundle and tie them up in festive ribbon. Great teacher gifts!!

Working with Waste Canvas

Working with waste canvas is great because it allows you to stitch any cross stitch design on anything from sweatshirts and baby clothes to curtains and placemats and anything in between. It really dosen't matter what fabric they are made of, almost anything can be used.

Waste canvas is an evenweave, mesh-like fabric, woven with threads stiffened with starch. To use it simply cut a piece of waste canvas at least 1 inch larger all around than the finished design. Pin the waste canvas into place on the right side of the fabric. Then using a contrasting thread, baste around the edges of the canvas and from corner to corner to hold in place.

Now stitch your design through the canvas onto the fabric, using the mesh like you would use Aida fabric. Some ideas would be to stitch angels on a shirt, fruit on placemats or kitchen curtains, stars or hearts on a denim purse, an initial on a little girls robe, a wolf on a sweatshirt, the list of things you can do goes on and on. Use your imagination and think of all the gifts you can make for the holidays.

When you have finished stitching your design, dampen the waste canvas with just a little water to soften up the starch, and then pull out the threads one by one. An easy way to do this is to use a pair of tweezers. After all the threads are removed your left with a beautiful design stitched perfectly on your fabric.

TIP: Finding the center

Most if not all charts, patterns, booklets and kits all want you to start stitching in the center of your fabric, but how do you find the center? Its really easy so here we go. First take your fabric and fold in half horizontally. Run a basting stitch along the fold. Then fold the fabric in half vertically and run another basting stitch along that fold. The point where both basting stitches intersect is the center of your fabric.

Thats a very easy method but I usually make it even easier. I fold the fabric in half vertically and horizontally and then open up to see where the fold lines meet. I just eye the center from there and it works just fine. No need to baste and anything that can save me time is just fine with me ; )

Quick Picture Frame

A friend of mine who loves to cross stitch told me about a really quick picture frame project she did and I thought I would pass it along to everyone. Now don't blink or you might miss it, it's that quick and easy to do ; )

First you have to cut a picture frame shape out of perforated plastic. You can make it any size you want. Then find a small design like a sunflower, snowman, planet or butterfly and stitch it in the corner. Fill in the rest of the frame background with black cross stitches (or any other color thats dark) and then add contrasting french knots all around. Add your picture and thats all there is to it. Quick and easy.

My friend has made these in all different sizes and alot of different colors. She also added magnets to the backs of some and has them hanging on her fridge and filing cabinet. Use your imagination and have fun!

Hello everyone!! Just checking in as we have been sooo busy getting ready for next month's new items that I haven't had much time to post here. Here is a quick update on what we have been working on .... a new collection will be added to the Stamped Cross Stitch category (it's a surprise, can't give it all away lol) , new monthly specials which some will be holiday related (the holidays are getting closer) , adding new items to our popular Counted Cross Stitch and Patterns categories.

Stamped Cross Stitch Quilts have been very popular this month and its a great time to get started on one for that new little one or to keep you warm in the cold months ahead. They also make wonderful gifts so start early on all your holiday projects and have them ready when gift giving time arrives. TIP: Preparing your fabric for stitching

The edges of cross stitch fabric take alot of abuse while a project is being stitched. There are many ways to keep fabric from fraying while you stitch.
The easiest and most common method is to bind the edges with masking tape. Because tape leaves a residue that's almost impossible to remove, it should be trimmed away completely after stitching is finished. When working on projects from books, leaflets or charts plan for your fabric to have a large enough margin around the stitched design so that the tape can be cut away.
There are some projects that you should just avoid using masking tape. If a project does not allow for a large enough margin to trim away the tape you can use a sewing machine to zigzag the edges. Hand sewing works also but is more time consuming.
Clothing, table linens, towels, baby bibs and other projects that will be washed on a regular basis when finished should be washed before any stitching is done to avoid shrinkage later. Stamped cross stitch projects that have pre-printed ink that fades with washing should NOT be washed beforehand.

Easy Project: Gift Tags

The holiday season for us crafters is here! An easy project you can do now to get ready for the holidays is making gift tags for all those gifts you will be giving. Here is what to do...

Choose a small design/motif from a larger design or from a pattern leaflet. Stitch the motif onto a piece of perforated paper. After that is done cut the paper large enough to include a place to stitch the words "To" and the person's name your giving the gift to, and "From" and your name. Decorate the edges with a row of cross stitches or anything else you like. When trimming the tag just remember to not trim to close to the stitched edges. Attach the gift tag to the gift with color-coordinated floss or very thin ribbon inserted through a hole in the perforated paper and tie it on to the gift bow or ribbon.

Very easy project and they can be made ahead of time. Make a bunch now and just add the names later. A great time saver and a nice way to add that personal touch to any gift. It is also a great way to get kids started cross stitching because the designs you use are are small and simple. Perfect for class projects, girl scout troops or rainy day afternoons.

Mini Pillows Project

Mini pillows are a simple project thats alot of fun. Whether you use these as basket accents, gift tags, ornaments for the tree or door hangers, they're sure to bring a smile to all who see them.

First choose a design that you want to stitch. Anything small will work. Snowflakes, teddy bears, flowers, fruit, a snowman or kitty cats.

For each mini pillow, cut stitched piece 1" larger than the design on all sides. Use a piece of the same fabric as stitched piece for backing (cut fabric the same size as stitched piece.) With wrong sides facing, use desired floss color to cross stitch fabric pieces together 1/2" from sides and bottom edge. Stuff with polyester fiberfill. Cross stitch across top of pillow 1/2" from edge. Fringe fabric to cross-stitched lines. For hanging pillow, attach ribbon to top center back of mini pillow. For pillow on basket, attach mini pillow to side of basket with craft glue.

Simple isnt it? Make a few and give as gifts at Christmas or use them as package ties. Below is just two of the many ornaments I have made. For one I used the method above and the other I used holiday fabric as the backing and added some piping to the edges.

Want to change things a bit?

Lets say you have a design thats stitched on 18 count fabric but now you want to change things a bit and stitch it on 14 count fabric. Well, how much fabric will I need? What size will the design now become? Figuring out these answers are really pretty simple. Follow along below and you will be able to change any design.

1) Count the number of horizontal squares of the design. For example, let’s say there are 175 squares

2) Divide the number of squares by the fabric count you wish to use. The result it the horizontal size of the design in inches. Example: 175 squares ÷ 14 count fabric = 12.5 inches

3) Add at least 4 inches of fabric to the design size to allow for framing or finishing. This number is the horizontal size of your fabric. Example: 12.5 inches + 4 inches = 16.5 inches

4) Count the number of vertical squares of the design. Example: let’s say there are 259 squares

5) Divide the number of squares by the fabric count to find out the vertical size of the design. Example: 259 squares ÷ 14 count fabric = 18.5 inches

6) Add at least 4 inches to the fabric size for framing or finishing. Example: 18.5 inches + 4 inches = 22.5 inches

In the example above, the finished size of your design would be 12.5 x 18.5 inches. The size of the fabric you will need would be 16.5 x 22.5 inches. On certain fabrics you may want to adjust the number of strands you use for stitching. The typical number of strands used on 14 count fabric is two. By increasing or decreasing the number of strands, you can create the finished effect you desire. Also note that changing the fabric count of your design will affect the amount of thread you will need, so make sure you have enough.

Stitch any one of the 18 count fabric kits we have and then later work it up on 14 count fabric. Changing things can be fun!!

Jazzing up the nursery!

A great way to jazz up any nursery is by using baby quilts. Our stamped cross stitch baby quilt kits come in many designs. Baby blocks, a rocking horse, the alphabet, angels with teddy bears and many others. Choose one to go with a new theme you planned or add to an exsisting theme. Do you know anyone who is expecting? Stitch one up and give it as a gift, it will be treasured for years.

Don't just use them in the crib or bassinet. Do you already have a balloon theme going? Then stitch up the Balloon Buddies Baby Quilt and use it as a wall hanging. It will add more color and fun to any child's room. Make more than one and have a matching lap quilt for mommy or daddy to use while feeding. Keep one in the car for when baby gets cold and have one at grandma's for all those visits.

A Creative Idea...

To build on what we have discussed below, here is an idea to get the creative juices going. First choose a small cross stitch kit to complete, maybe one that has flowers, fruit, butterflies or anything else that you like. After your kit is done use the pattern to make matching towels to carry the theme around the room or through the house.

Using Aida band, cut lengths about 1 inch longer than the towel width (any standard hand towel will work). Now choose elements from the completed pattern and stitch them across the Aida band, leaving about an inch of blank space on each end. When all your stitching is complete, attach the band to the towel (about 3-4 inches from the towel edge/bottom). Turn under about 1/2" of the band on each side of the towel and then either hand sew or use your sewing machine to stitch in place. Sew along all four sides to keep it secure. All done, now wasnt that easy :)

This is a great project for the kitchen, bathroom or nursery. Don't forget about the man in your life either. Stitch a golf picture and make a matching golf towel for him to use on the green or whip up a fishing design and then make a matching towel for his next fishing trip. They make great gifts!!

What to do with all those patterns?

What do you do with all the leftover patterns from your completed kits? Well, don't throw them away! They can all be used for other projects. Using your favorite parts of the patterns and small elements of others, you can create all kinds of beautiful things.

You just finished that christmas stocking kit now use pieces of the pattern and create matching ornaments. What about that welcome picture you just completed for the kitchen, well use smaller parts of the pattern and make new towels or enchance some placemats to match. Are the ideas starting to flow?

Door hangers, kitchen towels, pot holders, christmas ornaments, small picture frames and pins can all be created or enchanced with small designs placed here and there. Enchance your plain pillowcases with a small design or cluster a few designs together and make an original small collage wall hanging. Follow the pattern design colors exactly or choose your own floss colors to make things really unique.

The possibilities are endless, just use your imagination and don't throw away those old patterns.

Welcome to The Angels Nook Blog! This will be a place where new ideas and new products will be posted. Alot of people get our newsletter but here we will get a little more creative and informative. Below is just a brief description of some of the needlework kits available.

Counted Cross Stitch - Counted cross stitch designs are usually worked on an evenweave fabric like Aida cloth or linen. To create the design, the stitcher uses embroidery floss to place X's that correspond to the appropriate color symbol on the design chart. The different symbols on the chart represent different colors of floss used in the design.
Stamped Cross Stitch - Stamped designs are worked onto printed fabric using a combination of cross stitch and backstitch. Simply follow the stamped marks with the color of floss indicated.
Needlepoint - Needlepoint, sometimes called canvas work, uses threads or yarns on a mesh canvas. Stitched in a continental stitch (also known as a tent stitch or half cross stitch), most designs feature an easy-to-stitch fully printed canvas. Some designs are counted from a chart.
Crewel Embroidery - Crewel uses a variety of stitches done in yarns and threads. Traditional design is where all of the design is stitched, or choose newer designs where the fabric is fully printed and your stitching embellishes the design.
Felt Kits - From soft sculpture characters to felt Christmas stockings, these kits include a variety of fabrics, felts and other materials. Using a bit of gluing or simple stitching, you can create beautiful and fun finished products.
